Breaks & Bass
A UK-born lineage of chopped-up drums and chest-rattling bass.
This group comes from UK sound system and rave culture: chopped jungle, fast drum & bass, swinging UK garage, ethereal future garage, heavy dubstep, emotional future bass and frantic breakcore. What ties them together is broken beats and bass. Across the Atlantic, Jersey club from New Jersey also builds on sampled breaks and chops, but bounces harder and suits dance challenges. Chicago footwork pushes skipping, syncopated rhythms to 160 BPM, written for street dance battles.
What they share
- Irregular, syncopated drums, often sampled from old funk
