Gabber grew out of house and techno in the early 1990s, centred on Rotterdam. The name comes from Amsterdam slang meaning "friend". Paul Elstak's Rotterdam Records was a key base, and the Euromasters' "Amsterdam waar lech dat dan?" ("Amsterdam? Where's that?") mocked Amsterdam and fuelled the rivalry between the two cities. The Thunderdome parties drew up to about 40,000 people. The crowd wore tracksuits, bomber jackets and air-cushioned sneakers, men often shaved their heads, and people danced a fast stomping step called hakken.
Social context
